History of Reiki

Reiki is an ancient spiritual healing modality that originated in Japan in the 1800s.  Discovered by a man called Mikao Usui and passed down to many via great teachers. My Master in particular has passed on his reiki knowledge with such grace and confidence in his work and it is with my greatest intention that I uphold this integrity in my work.  The name 'Reiki'  originates from the meaning of universal life force energy "rei" meaning universal spirit and "ki" meaning vital life force or energy. This we all have the power to tap into.

Something I often share a story with clients of a child falling over. What is the first thing a parent or loved one will do? They will touch them with their hands because it is in our innate behavior to touch and heal with the power of our own hands.

My relationship to Reiki

Reiki is very near and dear to my heart, it is an art form of healing that I have been practicing for almost 6 years. Following traditional guidelines that have been passed down to me from my Master Shu and as the years have passed my practice has morphed into something of my own uniqueness. Tapping into Rongoa that I know is with me, a healing modality that lies within my whakapapa. I haven't traditionally learned Rongoa yet, but I intend to and I know my nga tupuna have been whispering loudly for me to listen.

I start off by cleansing myself, the space and the recipient with herbal smoke, I then create the container with the sound of my Tibetan singing bowl, and together we sink into a juicy space. I am open and with pure openhearted intentions I receive universal energy, it flows through my head, through my vessel and out my hands where it then transfers into you. To close the space I smudge again with dried herbs and chant with my singing bowl.

Om shanti, shanti, shanti.

How is Reiki done?

Reiki can be done with a light touch, no touch, or from a distance. It is the power of using intention with a traditional healing modality that holds charge, due to the ancient practice that has been exercised by and served so many. Reiki is done by the practitioner using their body as a channel or as I like to call it 'the pipeline', channeling universal life force energy, allowing it to come through the practitioner and then into the recipient. Then, the recipient's cells will do with it what it likes and needs. This is beyond any human understanding, this is deep wisdom and consciousness our bodies so inherently know. The recipient's body knows where healing is needed and as the practitioner, it is my obligation to clean and clear my vessel to listen intently and transfer the energy where I am being called to.

How does it feel?

Reiki is a gentle form of energy healing, your experience will be unique to what your being wants/needs to experience. The atmosphere in which I facilitate is gentle and relaxing with a feeling. Some people feel light and ethereal, whilst others may not experience a whole lot more than a sense of relaxation. Most of the time my hands heat up to an intense degree. My touch is light or not at all. Some people may feel a slight vibration and a comforting feeling and others may feel pain, most likely leading to further relief. Reiki is safe and non-invasive,  there is an element of trust that needs to be felt in order for the recipient to be open to receiving and I love to hold space and create a comfortable environment and safe experience.

The purge

Something my Master Shu taught me is called 'The purge' Sometimes once you have received Reiki you may experience feeling worse off. This is because healing isn't always smooth and glorious, it can be difficult at times and then lead to a replenishing and rejuvenating feeling, potentially days later. We are using universal life force energy to manipulate and move energies around our being, this is light work and can come with its challenges and difficulties. You may experience feeling an emotional release during the reiki session or afterward, potentially days later, this is your healing, I am just the facilitator for the work you need to do.
